Hey, Hot Shot! Entries for 2005 Summer Hot Shots

Youngna Park Featured in Brooklyn Diary Book by Lines & Shapes

By Stacy Oborn on September 17, 2010 10:25 AM

One of the most gratifying things about doing any kind of work in the arts is, forgive me for stating the obvious, getting to work with and come in contact with the artists—the people out there actually making things in their daily lives. And it is equally inspiring and gratifying when even in the super-busy realms of JBP HQ, that the people that make this all of this possible also make it an equal priority continue to work/make/say/think as a practicing artist. Hot Shot, food-lover, editor and writer Youngna Park is one such person, and we wanted to take a moment and share with you where you can find her most recent endeavor.

BDcover.jpgCover for upcoming release of Brooklyn Diary, published by Lines & Shapes

Youngna Park's photographs are featured in the publication Brooklyn Diary as one of the ten photographers showing images of the lives and environs of one of the most gritty, urban and artistic cities in the country. From the press release for the book:

Brooklyn, old and new, is known for its diversity and creative spirit. Brooklyn Diary takes a look inside the daily lives of twenty-one brooklyn artists, documented by ten different photographers. A place that is both dirty and beautiful, artistic endeavors are abundant in Brooklyn - from fashion and photography to organic gardens and distinctive food. the book is divided into categories of walk, eat, shop, home, and studio, and the artists profiled have shared their favorite (often lesser known) Brooklyn spots, making it a perfect, unconventional guide book for those planning to visit.

Brooklyn Diary is one of several publications from Lines & Shapes, a joint endeavor between artists Maria Vettese and Lena Corwin. Emphasizing the simple, the everyday, the illustrative, photographic and text-based, books from Lines & Shapes tend to be deceptively spare yet richly sourced meditations on themes from everything from plant life to lazy Sundays and the food and the turf of Brooklyn. Much like commonplace books, except ones that are curated collaborations between artists and designers, Lines & Shapes make things that both a pleasurable recess from normal daily concerns and a delivery into contemplation about the fleeting ephemerality of things, places and activities that we deeply enjoy and cause us to feel connected to the world and those that we love.

For a limited time, Lines and Shapes is offering a discount on pre-orders of Brooklyn Diary, which is set to be released on October 11, 2010. Whether you're a Brooklynite or one that wanders its streets and sidewalks virtually (like me), snatch up a copy and enjoy a peek into the lives, both private and public, of the people and businesses therein.

Watch Kelli Anderson: Caught in the Act!

By Casey on February 2, 2010 1:28 PM

Back in mid-December we wrote about Summer 2005 Hot Shot Kelli Anderson, who was being filmed for a Brooklyn Independent Television show called Caught in The Act. The show's short segments profile Brooklyn-based artists and give viewers a look into the process behind their work.

In the video, which you can now watch online, Kelli discusses the systems of organization that driver her diverse body of work, which includes multi-disciplinary projects like creating satirical ads for a Utopian NY Times, print and web design, painting, sculpture, and, of course, photography!

Congratulations to Caught in The Act and Kelli on a great episode.

Hot Shots Jessica Eaton and Noah Kalina in 01 Magazine

By Casey on January 2, 2010 10:28 AM

01mag.gif

I have to admit that I was unfamiliar with the Canadian 01 Magazine until the recent release of their fourth issue, dedicated to photography, but I am totally blown away. Their site is brimming with gigantic images, interviews, reviews, and essays (also check out their excellent blog).

There are lots of promising photographers in the mix as well as some familiar faces: Summer 2005 Hot Shot Noah Kalina is interviewed about his passion for collecting photo books, and newly crowned 2009 Second Edition Hot Shot Jessica Eaton reveals her conceptual and technical approach to making experimental photographs.

It's a treat to see so much interesting work and writing concentrated in one site. Congratulations to Noah and Jessica, and everyone at 01 on a great issue!

Hot Shot Kelli Anderson: Caught in the Act!

By Casey on December 12, 2009 11:26 PM

03.jpgUntitled by Kelli Anderson

You're probably used to seeing Hot Shots pop up on some of your favorite blogs and in galleries across the globe but it's not every day that you see Hot Shots on TV. Later this month, Summer 2005 Hot Shot Kelli Anderson will be featured on the Brooklyn Community Access TV show "Caught in the Act," which despite its saucy title, she promises "is not as risqué as it sounds!" The episode, which was filmed last week, includes an interview with Kelli about her work and life and then follows her on a shoot for her latest project.

All of the photos in the series in question are taken in extremely organized places—library stacks, the supermarket, an office, museum storage, etc.—where you have these long aisles set up for targeted browsing. I take an object from these aisles and retrofit it like a simple marionette, styling it so that it looks alive. Through the analog magic of invisible fishing line, I can then tie up the object so that it looks like it is floating in the space, escaping order.

A previous look into the process of Fall 2005 Hot Shot Curtis Mann (who is also, as was just announced, an invited artist to the Whitney Biennial 2010!) only added to the intrigue of the work but Kelli writes, "I hope that by filming the process we didn't suck the mystery right out of those photos. I feel like it is a very sustainable series and want to carry on."

Make sure not to miss this program, which will air later this month and will then repeat for the month of January. The BCAT TV Network cablecasts on Time Warner, Cablevision, RCN and Verizon cable systems in Brooklyn, and the channel designations vary between the systems. On Time Warner, BCAT can be found on channels 34, 35, 56, 57. On Cablevision, BCAT can be found on channels 67-70. On RCN, BCAT can be found on channels 82–85. On Verizon, BCAT can be found on channels 41–44.

Noah Kalina in PICTURE Magazine

By Casey on September 22, 2009 1:29 PM

tumblr_kqbs0hfCJh1qz6dm7o1_500.jpg.jpegPhotograph by Noah Kalina

Summer '05 Hot Shot and 20x200 edition-maker Noah Kalina is featured in the newest edition of PICTURE Magazine! Unfortunately the interview is not online, so you'll have to head to your nearest magazine shop to read the full copy. In Noah's own recap on his blog he writes, "after reading the article, another piece of wisdom I wish to share is: 'never do in person interviews. Always do the email interview.'"

There are just a few of Noah's 20x200 edition, Untitled LA, remaining on 20x200, and after that you will be out of luck, so get one while you can.

One Hot Shot Leads to Another (and Another. . .)

by Rachel Hulin

Rachel Hulin was crowned a Hot Shot way back in Spring '05. Since then she has built a blossoming career for herself as a working photographer, photo editor and writer. Her blog, A Photography Blog, is a jovial mix of photo news and insights, rambling thoughts (that somehow always seem relevant), and a lovely dose of idiosyncratic humor.

Perusing her blog today I learned that another Hot Shot (Summer '05), Noah Kalina, will be shooting for I.D. Magazine's annual design issue.

Scanning a little further down, I spotted an image from one of our newest Hot Shots, John Mann.

Seems like Miss Hulin truly has her (trigger) finger on the pulse.

Bookmark A Photography Blog today, and it'll make you smile tomorrow, I promise.

Hot Shot was in a Show: Robert Knight

by Hot Shot Robert Knight

It is shaping up to be a busy summer for Hot Shots from all seasons. Summer '05 Hot Shot Robert Knight was just part of a two-man show titled Things I've Seen, put together by student curator Simeon Durham, of the Hyde Leadership Academy. Knight's photographs explore the personal space of the bedroom. The exhibit was up at ARTSPACE, a non-profit organization presenting local and national visual art, provides access, excellence and education for the benefit of the public and the arts community in New Haven.

You can see some of Robert's interiors work on his well-designed website and you can purchase an edition at 20x200.

"The other day's pineapples," or Hot Shot James Deavin has a blog.

"The other day's pineapples," by James Deavin

Remember that talk about websites? I still don't have all the answers. But I have a good example. James Deavin, a Summer '05 Hot Shot, has a great website and a great blog. James's last post, by chance, is about website redesign. He writes, in general, with a candid honesty that is refreshing. It is nice to see his daily snaps so close to his carefully edited portfolio projects.

And there are gems like this, ". . .using a camera/phone hybrid. These devices mean you can more easily ask your friends for advice on composition-related dilemmas." I never thought of the cameraphone that way before. Brilliant.

Summer '05 Hot Shot Noah Kalina has a stunning photograph on the cover of the current issue of SEED and a 10-page photo essay on "Labs at Night" inside the magazine. And Kalina recently stopped by 20x200 to release an edition and a chat with Jen Bekman.

Everyday by Noah Kalina

By jane on September 2, 2006 11:11 PM

Summer '05 Hot Shot, Noah Kalina, has been taking a picture of himself everyday since January 11, 2000. He recently compiled a video to put together a time lapse of the past 6 years. You can see the subtle changes of the background and the changes of his sometimes wild hair. Here is the video posted by Noah on Vimeo, a great personal video sharing website.

Everyday on Vimeo

The video has been circulating throughout the internet along with another video, of the same concept but different execution by Ahree Lee.
