I have a question, can I pick up the phone and give you a call?
If you have questions about the competition, email us at help@heyhotshot.com. We promise to answer your email in a timely manner and we'll update the FAQ regularly in response to inquiries we receive.
I'm having problems uploading. What should I do?
Check your images and make sure they are around 800 pixels wide and 72dpi with a .jpg or .jpeg image extension. If you have all of the fields of the form filled out and you've tried everything and it still doesn't work, email us at help@heyhotshot.com.
How many photos may I submit?
Please submit five photos.
Just five? But I have like a zillion on my website!
Being a good editor is a big part of being a great photographer. Choose your images carefully.
Also, be sure to include your website's URL in the form. If we like your work, we'll take a look at your site during the review process.
What image formats do you accept for submissions and how big should they be?
We only accept digital files with .jpg or .jpeg extensions. The maximum file size for each image submitted is 2MB. If your file is bigger than 2MB, the system will reject it.
Is there a fee to enter?
Yes, there is an $80 handling fee to enter the competition.
Can I get a refund?
Handling fees are non-refundable.
When will the Hot Shots be announced?
The five Hot Shots selected for this edition will be announced in October 2010, exact date TBA. The Grand Prize winner will be announced in early 2011.
When is the showcase?
The Hey, Hot Shot! 2010 Exhibition will open with a reception for the artists in January 2011, exact date TBA.
Can I send stuff in the mail?
No, we only accept submissions via our web site.
What kind of work are you looking at?
Film, digital and photo-based work are all considered. Please note that the gallery itself is quite small. We often show large-scale prints but if you feel like your work only looks good at say, 50" x 60" hung in a grid, it simply won't fit in our space.
How will the panel review submissions?
The panel reviews work on screen only. We recommend a minimum image size of 800 pixels in width, with its proportional height. If your work is selected and you need to make prints, you must have a higher resolution version of the same file available.
My pictures speak for themselves; do I have to provide a bio + statement?
Yes, only applicants who complete all the required fields on the entry form will be considered. Please note, there is a 250 word maximum for the bio + statement fields.
Do I have to have a website to apply?
No, a website is not requirement to enter. However, we often look at contenders websites if we are interested in seeing more work, so encourage you to have one.
I live in Rome (or Lima or Tehran or Vancouver); can I still submit work?
Sure! We have exhibited work by photographers from all over the world. However, photographers who are selected are responsible for producing and framing their work, as well as shipping it to/from the gallery.
I'm not all that experienced when it comes to printing. Can I still enter?
Yes, if your work is selected and you need advice about printing, we'll help you figure that stuff out. We have great resources available.
If I am up for one curator's choice prize, can I be up for ones after that deadline?
No. When you apply, your entry is applicable for the curator's choice prize active during that time. However, you always continue to be eligible to be a Hot Shot and for our Grand Prize. We set this limitation so our curators are not overwhelmed by submissions.
My collaborator and I work as a team. Can we enter as a pair?
Yes, we do allow joint and collaborative entries. In the bio section of the submission, please submit a single bio that pertains to the work you've done together and in the "name" field, enter either the name you use as a pair or one of your names. Both collaborators must be over the age of 18.
Why have I not been featured as a contender?
We'd love to feature each and every contender, but since we receive far more entries than there are days in the competition, it's simply not possible! The Hey, Hot Shot! team selects one contender a day to feature on our blog, which aims to represent the breadth of work we receive.
Does this mean I am no longer in the running?
Absolutely not! Even if you're not featured as a contender, you are still in the running. Our featured contenders are not selected by our panelists.
Can I submit more than once?
Yes. There is no limit to the number of times you can enter. Each submission of five images requires a separate entry.
Do the images have to be in the same proportions as 20x200 prints in order to be considered?
No. 20x200 editions reflect work at every proportion. In the past we have featured editions that are square, panoramas and a variety of other dimensions.
I saw the fine print on your agreement page but I didn't read it very closely. Can you run that by me again?
